8 Cleaning Tips for People With Asthma and Allergy
Everyone would love to live in a clean home, but when you or your family member suffer from asthma or allergies, it’s even more important to make sure your home is clean and trigger-free.
Studies show that 80% of people with asthma also have allergies and that most people with asthma have allergic asthma. And the best way to prevent allergic reactions and allergic asthma is to avoid your known allergens/triggers altogether.

Wash your beddings regularly
Your sheets are often covered with human hair and even pet hair (if you have pets at home), pollen that crept on your clothes, dust mites and many more.
Wash your beddings on a weekly basis. Use a gentle detergent and, if possible, dry it through sunlight. Drying in sunlight is recommended as ultraviolet light can sterilise clothes and beddings. Always have a spare set of sheets that you can use even when you don’t have time to wash the dirty set.
Empty your trash bin daily
Overflowing trash bins are a breeding ground for bacteria and can cause air pollution and respiratory diseases. Empty your trash bins daily or before it gets full. Make sure that you put garbage bags in every trash bin, tie them and dispose of them properly.
Beware of harsh cleaning products
Some cleaning products and scented room fresheners with VOCs (volatile organic compounds) can actually cause allergic asthma symptoms. It is the same with strong-smelling disinfectants such as bleach or ammonia, which can irritate airways and trigger some people’s symptoms.

Avoid scented products and stick with something gentle. You can go back to plain old soap and water - or try DIY recipes using citrus peels, baking soda powder, and vinegar.
Keep your pets clean
Baths are essential to your pets’ health, and keeping them clean will also benefit your health. Wash and brush your pet every week. Fluffier pets need daily brushing. Make sure that everyone in your family washes their hands after touching the pet.
Limit your pet’s access to your soft furnishings, and keeping your bedroom off-limits can help maintain your sleeping space cleaner. And as you clean your pet, don’t forget to wash their toys, beddings, drinking and eating bowls.
Wear protective gear
One of the most allergy-triggering activities for those with allergies is cleaning. Allergy sufferers need to protect themselves while cleaning. Dust, pet dander, and other particles can stir up. Wear a mask that fits well over your nose and mouth. Use gloves when vacuuming or dusting. If possible, ask someone else to do the cleaning.
Keep humidity levels low in your home
If you have allergic asthma, a humidifier can make the problem worse because dust mites, mildew and moulds all thrive in higher humidity levels. Keep the humidity not more than 30 to 50 per cent in your home; using a dehumidifier can help.
